Bradbury was worried about the advent of Reader’s Digest. Today we have Wikipedia and tweets. He worried that people would read only headlines. Today it seems that half the words online have been replaced with emojis. The more we erode language, the more we erode complex thought and the easier we are to control. According to the show’s production designer, John Paino, the floor of its forbidden room was made of plastic models of baby teeth. “We shaved them down on the backs and a little bit on the top,” Paino told Fernandez, “so it would seem like she had made an attempt to make them resemble the tusk process, because the floor looks like if there’s walrus tusks or whale tusks or elephant tusks.” “She made this fabulous dollhouse, so she would have probably gone to great lengths to sand them down and make them almost unnoticeable.” Criticism • Why I'd like to be … Kate Beckinsale in Cold Comfort Farm

Scholastic Corporation bought the U.S. rights at the Bologna Book Fair in April 1997 for US$105,000, an unusually high sum for a children's book. [15] Scholastic's Arthur Levine thought that "philosopher" sounded too archaic for readers [32] and after some discussion (including the proposed title "Harry Potter and the School of Magic" [33]), the American edition was published in September 1998 [34] under the title Rowling suggested, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. [15] Rowling later said that she regretted this change and would have fought it if she had been in a stronger position at the time. [11] Philip Nel has pointed out that the change lost the connection with alchemy, and the meaning of some other terms changed in translation, for example from " crumpet" to " muffin". While Rowling accepted the change from both the British English "mum" and Seamus Finnigan's Irish variant "mam" to "mom" in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, she vetoed this change in the later books, which was then reversed in later editions of Philosopher's Stone. However, Nel considered that Scholastic's translations were considerably more sensitive than most of those imposed on British English books of the time, and that some other changes could be regarded as useful copyedits. [30] Since the British editions of early titles in the series were published months prior to the American versions, some American readers became familiar with the British English versions owing to having bought them from online retailers. [35] The finale stuck close to the plot of Flynn’s book while being presented in a different way, particularly at the very end. To make readers able to connect more, the author has to make the character more realistic which means giving a character a flaw. The following books, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Odyssey and Of Mice and Men, are books we focused on this year and they all represented characters with flaws that the readers were able to identify and relate to. Boo Radley, Odysseus and Lennie were characters in the books that have flaws, but have good intentions. To Kill A Mockingbird, is a book that focuses on a town that faces racism. While taking the reader through a journey of how it was in the 1930s, the reader comes in context with many different characters. Arthur Radley, who is also known as Boo in reference to a ghost, chooses to isolate himself from all of society. He is a lone wolf who prefers to do things on his own and not disturb his neighbors and fellow town members. Therefore, he only leaves his house at night and when he does, he just walks around the neighborhood and looks at his neighbors houses. This may sound creepy, however, he only does this for the benefit of himself. He knows how his society actually is, which the reader finds out when Tom Robinson is called guilty even though, the reader can infer that he is innocent. His choice to be isolated is his flaw because it causes many people to make up rumours about him. Some people claim he is a ghost, while others believe he is a murderer. During a social visit to Montag's house, they brag about ignoring the bad things in their lives and have a cavalier attitude towards the upcoming war, their husbands, their children, and politics. Mrs. Phelps' husband Pete was called in to fight in the upcoming war (and believes that he'll be back in a week because of how quick the war will be) and thinks having children serves no purpose other than to ruin lives. Mrs. Bowles is a three-times-married single mother. Her first husband divorced her, her second died in a jet accident, and her third committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. She has two children who do not like or respect her due to her permissive, often negligent and abusive parenting; Mrs. Bowles brags that her kids beat her up, and she's glad she can hit back. When Montag reads Dover Beach to them, he strikes a chord in Mrs. Phelps, who starts crying over how hollow her life is. Mrs. Bowles chastises Montag for reading "silly awful hurting words". Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the best-known and most widely read books in the United States. Since its publication in 1960, the novel has been translated into some 40 languages and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. A staple on American high- school reading lists, the novel has inspired numerous stage and film adaptations, the most notable of which was the 1962 film starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch. Lee’s novel continues to resonate with audiences today; in 2018 a stage adaptation of the novel debuted to rave reviews on Broadway. Is there a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird? Watching the books burn was an otherworldly experience. The hiss of incinerating pages sounded like the final gasps of hundreds of dying souls. Ewell is found dead with a knife under his ribs. Boo materializes inside the Finch house, is identified by Scout as her savior, and they're soon sitting side by side on the front porch swing. The sheriff decides that no good would be served by accusing Boo of the death of Ewell. That would be like "killing a mockingbird," and we know from earlier in the film that you can shoot all the bluejays you want, but not mockingbirds -- because all they do is sing to bring music to the garden. Not exactly a description of the silent Boo Radley, but we get the point.
